水流・四季の風景が赤い神橋（日光・栃木）

神橋

二荒山神社の建造物で、日光山内の入り口にかかる美しい橋。奈良時代末期、勝道上人が日光山を開く際、大谷川に行く手を阻まれ神仏に加護を求めた。すると深沙王が現れ2匹の蛇を放った。その蛇の背から山菅が生えて橋になったのが神橋であるという伝説が残っている。現在の朱塗りの姿になったのは寛永13年(1636)。その後洪水で流されたが、明治37年に(1904)に再建。国の重要文化財であり、平成11年(1999)には世界遺産にも登録された。日本三大奇橋の一つに数えられている。

Shinkyo

A beautiful bridge at the entrance to Nikko Sannai, which is part of Futarasan Shrine. At the end of the Nara period, when Shodo Shonin opened Mt. Then King Shinsha appeared and released two snakes. Legend has it that a mountain sedge grew from the back of the snake and became a bridge, which is called Shinkyo. It was in 1636 (13th year of the Kan'ei era) that it took on its current vermillion-lacquered appearance. It was later washed away by a flood, but was rebuilt in 1904. It is a national important cultural property and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. It is counted as one of the three most unusual bridges in Japan.
